Week(end) 1 – in the books

After all the weirdness with the CHL in the offseason going on, I can’t say that I had much optimism about the early season, given that we lost our two best offensive players (Jack Combs, Chad Costello) to the ECHL and of all places, the Colorado Eagles.

That being said, we did manage to bring back 10 players, and Rammer also managed to recruit some kids with size, and evidently, the ability to play pretty damned good defense.

The Tulsa Oilers took to the road to being the 2011-2012 season, and came out with a bang.

On Friday night at the Allen Event Center, the Oilers opened up the scoring just 71 seconds into the new season.  Happening just after an apparent Oiler goal was disallowed by referee Mark-Andre Lavoie, Sean Erickson scored the first goal of the new season, with an assist from Gary Steffes.  Steffes would factor into this game considerably.

At 11:02 of the first, Michel Beausoleil fed Oiler newcomer Patrik Levesque (pronounced ‘Luh-veck’) in the high-slot for a one-timer that he would fire past Americans netminder Rejean Beauchemin.

Thirty seconds before the end of the 1st period. Gary Steffes and Scott Langdon would get into a brawl that would leave Steffes with a 2, 5 and a 10 minute misconduct for instigation.  The Oilers would kill off the ensuing penalty, and would go on to kill off four more for the evening, to go a perfect 5 for 5 on the PK.

In the second, Michel Beausoleil would score on the Oilers first power play goal of the season, with Levesque and rookie defenseman Jeff Terminesi getting the helpers.  There would be no other scoring in the middle frame.

In the third period. Steffes would complete his Gordie Howe hat trick (which is a goal, an assist and a fight in the same game) when he received a nifty pass from Levesque just outside of the crease and put the puck home.  Beausoleil got an assist on the goal as well.

Jim McKenzie ended Ian Keserich’s shutout bid with a goal with 1:23 to go in regulation.  Keserich turned away 29 of 30 American shots, and the Oilers go on to win the match 4-1.

The following night at the NYTex Sports Centre (also known as the Shoe Box to many), the Oilers would take on what should be a very good Dan Wildfong led Texas Brahma team.

This would prove to be a very defensive-minded battle on both sides, until Gary Steffes finally opened up the scoring at 15:00 of the second period.  Beausoleil and Terminesi would get the assists.

In the third period, the line of rookies Ryan Cramer, Mike Ullrich and Dylan Clarke would score their first on the power play at 13:26, with Cramer getting the goal and Ullrich and Clarke notching the assists.

Late in regulation, Levesque would seal the deal with an empty net goal, assisted by Steffes and Cramer.

Once again, Ian Keserich was stellar in the pipes.  He turned away all 34 Brahma shots to earn his first shutout for the season.

Good start boys…let’s keep this moving into Friday when the Thunder visit at the BOK Center.  Game time is 7:35, and I will be live-blogging from the game.

Since I know very little about this team right now, I will leave it to those who might know some about them to leave comments here.

It is of note though that the Oilers have changed to using UStream for their broadcasts.  This works out better because we can now listen to the games on our phones (UStream has an app for the iPhone/iPad and Android/Android Tables..sorry, I don’t think one exists for BlackBerry users yet).  If you want to listen, click on the link above the title that says ‘Game Broadcast’.

Thank heavens hockey season is here.

Oilers trade for veteran blue-liner, add familiar faces

Taken from the Oiler’s website news article

TULSA, OK – With the recent signings of veterans Tyler Fleck and Gord Bell, Tulsa Oilers fans will see some familiar faces on the ice when training camp opens next week. The Oilers also picked up Gio Flamminio in a trade with Rapid City for future considerations.

Fleck was an ironman for the Oilers last season when he appeared in all 76 games. The 5’10”, 210-pound defenseman was one of Tulsa’s toughest players and finished the 2010-11 campaign with eight points and 153 penalty minutes. A 12-year veteran of the CHL, Fleck spent nine years as a member of the Oklahoma City Blazers and spent half a season with the Missouri Mavericks before joining the Oilers halfway into the 2009-10 season. “Tyler is just such a smart, hard-nosed hockey player,” said Oilers head coach Bruce Ramsay. “He’s everything you want in a defenseman, and he brings a lot of leadership to our club.”

Despite only playing in 16 games last season, Bell made a big impact at the center position for the Oilers. He put up five goals and nine assists to finish the year with a +5 rating. A native of West Lock, Alberta, Bell began his CHL career in 2006. He spent two years in Oklahoma City and two years with the Amarillo Gorillas. In 2009-10, Bell posted a career high 45 points in 60 games with the Gorillas. “Gord is solid, responsible centerman at both ends of the ice,” said Ramsay. “I was very impressed with his play last year, and I’m expecting him to be a big contributor for us once again.”

For the past three seasons, Flamminio was a fixture on the Rapid City blue line. The 5’11”, 195-pound defenseman appeared in 210 games for the Rush and put up 72 points to go along with 280 penalty minutes. Flamminio also spent time with the Oklahoma City Blazers and Mississippi Sea Wolves of the ECHL. A product of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Flamminio played in his 400th career game last season. “Gio brings so much experience to the table and he knows how to win,” Ramsay said. “He won a championship with Rapid City in 2010 and we feel very fortunate to have a player of his caliber on our roster.”

Five added to training camp roster

Taken from the Tulsa Oiler release

TULSA, OK – Training camp is set to begin on October 10th and the Tulsa Oilers have added more youth to the roster with the signings of Gary Steffes, Brandon Vossberg, Brendan Taylor, Jeff Amadio, and Dustin Cloutier.

Steffes returns to Tulsa after a stellar rookie season with the Oilers. The 6’1” 185 pound forward appeared in all 66 games for the Oilers in 2010-11 and finished the year with 19 goals and 24 assists. Steffes played a big role in the Oilers postseason appearance and his contributions earned him a spot on the CHL All-Rookie team. A native of Grand Blanc, Michigan, Steffes began his hockey career with the Cedar Rapids Roughriders of the USHL and then went on to play four seasons at Miami (Ohio) University. “We’re thrilled to have Gary back on this team,” said Oilers head coach Bruce Ramsay. “He’s one of the best young players in this league and he’s only 24 years old. I’m excited to see just how good Gary can become because he’s going to play a huge part in our team’s success.”

Vossberg comes to the Oilers after a four-year college hockey career at the University of Denver. In 2007-08, Vossberg played in 39 games and helped the Pioneers to a WCHA tournament championship. A defensive minded forward, Vossberg excels on the penalty kill and was one of Denver’s team leaders in plus-minus. The native of St. Paul, Minnesota was twice selected to the WCHA All-Academic team and was nominated in 2010 for the Mellon Hockey Humanitarian Award given annually to the college hockey player who most personifies commitment to giving in his community. “At 6’2” 210 pounds, Brandon is an imposing physical presence on the ice and he’s also a very intelligent hockey player and an outstanding young man,” Ramsay said. “He’s a great addition to our club and I’m always happy to bring in guys from tradition rich college programs.”

22-year olds Taylor and Amadio are both veterans of the junior hockey ranks while Cloutier is a 25-year old who just finished his collegiate career. Taylor, a 5”11” 195 pound center, spent the last six seasons playing in the Canadian junior leagues. Amadio spent the 2010-11 season with the Michigan Moose of the AAHL. The 6’2” 210 pound defenseman scored five goals in 16 games with the Moose. Cloutier spent four full seasons playing for Bentley University in Massachusetts. A 5’10” 175 pound forward, Cloutier is a Michigan native who played his junior hockey with the Mahoning Valley Phantoms of the NAHL. In 2006-07, Cloutier led the Phantoms in scoring and was named to the All-NAHL First Team. “Brendan, Jeff, and Dustin bring a lot of talent to our team,” said Ramsay. “I fully expect all three of those guys to come into camp with something to prove and to provide a lot of energy for our hockey team.”

The Tulsa Oilers play their home opener at 7:35pm on October 28th against the Wichita Thunder at the BOK Center.
